How to Laser Engrave Tumblers Like a Pro (Without the Guesswork)
Machine Preparation:
- Ensure proper safety equipment (laser safety glasses).
- Power on the laser engraver.
- Adjust laser head distance (typically 3mm from object surface).
- Enable and set air assist for clean engraving.
Rotary Setup:
- Attach rotary tool securely to machine’s Y-axis.
- Set rotary tool circumference (commonly 160mm per rotation).
- Angle tumbler slightly (~2.8°) or use the Tumbler Trick(tm) Level.
Software Setup (e.g., LightBurn):
- Enable rotary mode.
- Set tumbler circumference accurately.
- Rotate the design with the top oriented toward the tumbler’s opening.
- Set engraving speed (e.g., 9000 mm/min) and power (e.g., 50-70%).
- Select number of engraving passes (typically 2).
- Choose “Current Position” as the starting point.
- Specify job origin clearly (e.g., middle right for partial designs, bottom right for full wraps).
- Preview and confirm total engraving time.
- Export and load G-Code to the machine (via SD card/USB).
Final Checks & Engraving:
- Use framing function to verify placement.
- Adjust tumbler positioning if necessary.
- Begin engraving.
Tips:
- Test designs on masking tape or a sacrificial tumbler to preview results.
- Confirm orientation and rotation settings before starting to avoid mirrored or inverted designs.
